Had I any inkling that he’d be at Netroots Nation, I would have totally picked Austin over the San Francisco BlogHer Conference in a hot second. (Sorry, ladies.) This Atari democrat and Nobel Peace Prize Winner is a huge inspiration. Some people call Big Al stiff and overly formal, but they’ve obviously never seen him speak. When he gets on a roll, he floods the room with his passion and brilliance. Plus the cowboy boots? Too cute. And remember when he laid one on Tipper at the 2000 DNC? I like to think of it as his Rhett Butler moment. During his surprise appearance at Netroots Nation, Al talked about the work he’s doing with the Alliance for Climate Protection and reiterated his dramatic challenge for the U.S. “to commit to producing 100% of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.” That’s a tall order, but when you listen to him explain why it’s necessary and how it’s possible, you have to agree it makes sense. By doing this we can:
save the planet (that should be enough right there )
create jobs and stimulate the economy
disentangle ourselves from those crazy middle east politics
