An Inconvenient Opera Now More Incovenient, Director Quits

Filed under: Movies, TV and Books , Climate Change When I first heard the news that Milan’s famous opera house La Scala had commissioned an operatic version of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth last May, I thought: how could they possibly think that would make for a compelling theatrical performance? Apparently, director William Friedkin was thinking the same thing. Friedkin — who oversaw such films as The French Connection and The Exorcist — left the production this week citing “creative differences.” Is that because he thinks that a production based on a climate change documentary is going to bomb? According to the NYT , Friedkin was having trouble with the poet JD McClatchy who’s charged with writing the libretto. Though nobody’s saying it outright, it stands to reason that Friedkin was fighting an uphill battle by trying to fill the 3 hour borefest with special effects sequences. The shows composer Giorgio Battistelli criticized the outgoing director’s approach and slammed him for his use of special effects, saying “Opera isn’t Hollywood.” No kidding, that’s why opera is a dying art form.
