Apple MacBook gets reluctant nod from Greenpeace

Filed under: Shopping Guide , GreenTech , Activism Steve Jobs says the newest Apple MacBook are “the industry’s greenest notebooks” and Greenpeace agrees . This means quite a bit since Apple has been the target of many of Greenpeace’s attacks. The new MacBooks are encased in aluminum and have almost no polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or brominated flame retardant (BFR). These toxins are released into the air when burned which happens to much of the electronic waste that goes overseas. The one place that Apple was unable to find a substitution for PVC was in the power cord. In addition to eliminating many of the toxic parts, Apple has increased the computer’s energy efficiency and reduced the packaging by 41 of the power used by regular LCD displays. The aluminum and glass enclosures are easily recycled. Though Greenpeace is still pushing Apple to make more changes in the construction of its laptops and other electronics, they are happy to see the number of toxins reduced in the newest machine.
