Greenpeace helps Ben and Jerry’s with that Cleaner Greener Freezer

Filed under: News , GreenTech , Climate Change As Kelly told you earlier this week, ice cream eco-activists Ben and Jerry’s are testing out a new kind of hydrocarbon freezer that doesn’t use the notoriously bad, greenhouse gas causing “F” gases. Today, all freezers in the U.S. use the “F” gases that are incredibly damaging to our environment as they leak out of the cooling units over time, contributing to global warming. Since we like to make everything cold, with A/C units in supermarkets, cars, your house and even vending machines, this gas is leaking out all over the place. The hydrocarbon freezers, which are F-gas-free, are common in Europe and Asia. Ben and Jerry’s are the first to try out the new freezers here in the States. Do you know who we have to thank for this brilliant move? The folks at Greenpeace ! It turns out Greenpeace has been instrumental in the process of popularizing the freezers overseas, and now they’re spearheading the effort to get them approved in the U.S. Ben and Jerry’s, as Kelly mentioned, is testing the freezers in two markets as part of the approval process, and proving that they won’t blow up. Since they’re already being used in other parts of the world, I hope these “Cleaner Greener Freezers” are approved and distributed quickly to other retailers, and the non-F-gas coolant is incorporated by manufacturers. I also hope that Ben and Jerry’s comes out with a Greenpeace flavor soon, so I can my support for this great partnership the best way possible: by eating more ice cream!
