Filed under: Celebrities , Climate Change , Plants and Wildlife Unless you’re one of those types who takes off work and gathers ceremoniously around a rodent with divine meteorological powers each February 2nd , you probably thought that yesterday was simply the day after the Super Bowl. In fact, it was one of the most important days of the year when it comes to predicting weather events: Groundhog Day . According to folklore, if the Groundhog sees his shadow, we get 6 more weeks of winter. No shadow, we get an early spring. The big question for us this year is: what does it mean when the groundhog goes berserk and bites the mayor of New York, drawing blood? Because that’s exactly what famed groundhog Staten Island Chuck (second banana to Punxsutawny Phil) did yesterday morning to mayor Michael Bloomberg during the annual festivities. Obviously, Chuck had a more urgent message to deliver about this year’s weather. I believe that if we consider his aggressive behavior as a sign, we might be able to understand the larger implications about our long term climate. By biting Bloomberg, was Chuck trying to warn us about an ensuing global climate catastrophe? Or was he just having a post Super Bowl hangover?
