Ted Danson Opines on Off-Shore Drilling

Filed under: Celebrities , Activism Just in case you were on the edge of your seat wondering, let me cut to the chase — the former Sam Malone wasn’t “cheering” for off-shore drilling when he appeared before the House Committee on Natural Resources . The actor is a highly respected environmentalist, and testified in his role a board member of Oceana, a well known ocean conservation board. Opposition to offshore drilling is what got Danson involved in environmental activism 20 years ago. It even motivate him to form the organization that ultimately became Oceana with his wife, actor Mary Steenburgen. On Wednesday he strongly urged the committee to consider reestablishing the moritorium on off-shore drilling, which lapsed last year amidst calls of “Drill Baby, Drill!” Shudder. Danson pointed out that the economic risk of a oil spill is far greater than any benefit that could come from new drilling — risks like lost food sources from the fish killed, and lost tourism revenue from ruined beaches. Plus, the benefits from drilling wouldn’t show up for a good 10 to 15 years, anyway! Not exactly the “quick fix” the Republicans tried to convince us was just sitting there, being squandered. It’s a long shot to think that the ban will be put back in place, but the odds are a lot better with the current administration than with the previous one!
