Filed under: Cars and Transportation , Climate Change It happened all of the sudden. One day, SUVs where darting in and out of traffic, cutting you off at the on ramp, and slurping up gasoline like there’s no tomorrow… and then , all of the sudden, KaBoom! The oil price hike of 2008 got so out of control that the companies that once grew rich off SUV sales are now teetering on the edge of bankruptcy — and the SUVasaurus gets added to the list of endangered species. Back in history class, my favorite lessons were usually absorbed when the teacher got too lazy to read word-for-word out of the text book and turned the day’s lessons over to the small screen. Maybe that’s why this commercial really grabbed my attention. Anyways, aside from extreme irony of making a commercial about the extinction of the SUV, in order to promote a new SUV, this video also sidesteps any mention of climate change — or even pollution . I guess climate change denial is probably the best way to sell SUVs, although most people reading this site would say that it’s a bit ingenuous. As if they were trying to boost the comedic irony, the 26mpg Grand Vitara is shown tearing up and down through pristine mountainous landscapes, complete with snow-capped mountains. How this commercial manages to avoid the elephant in the room is impressively cynical. It reminds me a little of those ads that subtly mocked climate change .
